Respect the Entrepreneurs who build for the Future

Mr. Fish
I'll be honest, writing these BLOG's are not easy. Coming up with a new idea every week is difficult. We have limited "Source Material". The two pictures for this week were taken in Mr. Fish, late August 2019.

We had not visited the place for over a year. We'd known that ownership had changed hands; however, the prior owner stayed around to work the kitchen (Good move, excellent food!). When we entered the renovated property we were shocked. The new owners had poured a good bit of money into revitalizing that little shack!

Mr. Fish is not the only place in town (Town of Shelburne); however, sadly, it is the only place we've got current pictures of. Yes, prior to taking these, we'd asked permission of the owner and had received a nod of approval. To be respectful, it would be best to recognize all of the independent Restaurants in town who have plowed money into their establishments. Sorry, we do not possess the photos and additional information to do justice.

COVID-19 has been disruptive for all of us. The Entrepreneurs who have attempted to forge ahead on their own with a dream are being pushed. The big corporations have extensive infrastructure under the covers to assist them navigate through these difficulties; however, the independents are not so lucky.

Our family started doing "Road Trips" about 15 years ago. At the time, my wife didn't not understand the term "Greasy Spoon" and for the most part was revolted to even consider stepping into a place holding such a moniker. She soon realize that the ones that have been around for a while provide a unique menu, often have wholesome daily specials and the staff are family. She was soon won over to the "Greasy Spoon" side of things.

Let collectively have our fingers crossed that those small mom and pop shops, the Greasy Spoon's, All Day Breakfast, Independent Truck Stops and such manage to pull through across this country.

How will this summer play out regarding Tourism? How will the non corporate / franchise establishments survive? It's up to you and me. Regardless of where you reside, when you're out and about, make the effort to visit the mom and pop shops. Get to know the owners. Invest in our (all of our) futures by supporting the Entrepreneurs, the Independents, the Mom and Pop's.

With search criteria of "husqvarna 128rj review", you don't get much. I'm sure if we pop into the Amazon link they'll have something. Now, what's our experience with this durable item? This is a BLOG and that typically means a bit of a story. We will not fault the Dayton dealer, in the Canadian community of Yarmouth County. They were responsible and respectable while purchasing the trimmer, chainsaw and lawnmower back 4 years ago. Taking the trimmer back late this summer, they were also polite an...

Welshtown Haven and Hugelkulture? The start of something more....

A brief description of Hugelkulture can be found at The Old Farmers Almanac , where the picture above is explained. The site UK Permaculture , provides the "Permaculturalist" view and Youtube "How to build a Hugelkulture Bed" , is is a short video on the topic. South Shore Nova scotia was originally formed through Glacial Erosion and Deposition . Different areas have different Soil Types , some Clay, others Sandy. Welshtown Haven is sitting on Silt. Silt makes excellent Loam; however, the trick in the transition is organic matter. When it rains (non summer months) it rains hard. Due to the soil, it filters down into the water table leaving the surface dry. What is missing is a solid layer of organic matter or loam. While an old growth deciduous forest would provide this, the predominant overstory has been coniferous. Over the years South Shore has been logged, harvesting the old growth and allowing the fertile upper layer of loam soil to wash away. So, the so...

BILL NO. 101 - Tourist Accommodations Registration Act

Tourist Accommodations Registration Act The management of Welshtown Haven Inc., are not legal experts nor do we wish to project ourselves as such. If anything that follows interests you, please seek professional legal advice. Our opinion may not reflect the intent of the act or the intentions of the Nova Scotia Government. What is written below is observation on our part only. In 2019, the province of Nova Scotia passed some legislation regarding Tourist Accommodations. In short, they are defining some responsibilities. We've provided the link above and we'll talk about some of it below. Now, lets look at the timing of this new act. It received Royal Assent on April 12, 2019. This means that anyone falling into the business construct of Short Term Accommodation (as defined by the act) are now falling under these laws. In Nova Scotia, the tourism season starts in April 1st, with a new "Fixed Roof Accommodation" license payed for by the provider around this date. It h...
