It is suspected this may have occurred during a gathering that may or may not have taken place in compliance with COVID-19 Restrictions. Management does not admit to any sanctioned gathering that may have been in breach of COVID-19 guidelines and in turn accepts no liability of such gathering that may or may not have taken place. It is reported by management that prior to the night of December 21st, this house as seen in the picture above was in good repair and functioning as per architectural design. Any individuals having any knowledge of this vandalization or other such destructive actions upon this property, please contact Management. Nova Scotia Self Isolation and the Fixed Roof Accommodation Act

If it is on Facebook, it must be true? Well, the above was an informational Meme found On Facebook and kinda spells out the implications of what a 14 day Quarantine means.  The Nova Scotia Government have a fairly good  COVID-19 Website that provides some hot topic sub links. The "Symptoms and Testing" spells out the 14 day self Isolation requirement. The provincial government is taking things very seriously as spelled out in our earlier Blog " CKBW Social Isolation made easy ", back in August 04.  Fixed Roof Accommodation Act spells out that 28 days or less is considered a "Short Term Accommodation" and to offer these short term accommodations, the provider needs to have been granted a license. So, this weeks BLOG we will ponder the issue of Who, What Where and Why implications while trying to mesh the two issues. The would-be tourist looking to secure lodging in Nova Scotia for Self Isolation will need a reason for entry into the province, a place to...

BILL NO. 101 - Tourist Accommodations Registration Act

Tourist Accommodations Registration Act The management of Welshtown Haven Inc., are not legal experts nor do we wish to project ourselves as such. If anything that follows interests you, please seek professional legal advice. Our opinion may not reflect the intent of the act or the intentions of the Nova Scotia Government. What is written below is observation on our part only. In 2019, the province of Nova Scotia passed some legislation regarding Tourist Accommodations. In short, they are defining some responsibilities. We've provided the link above and we'll talk about some of it below. Now, lets look at the timing of this new act. It received Royal Assent on April 12, 2019. This means that anyone falling into the business construct of Short Term Accommodation (as defined by the act) are now falling under these laws. In Nova Scotia, the tourism season starts in April 1st, with a new "Fixed Roof Accommodation" license payed for by the provider around this date. It h...

2020 - South of the 49th Parallel - US of A

The first polls will close at 6 p.m. Eastern time and with luck the world will sleep at peace, the world will not end. It is expected that the counting of ballots will result in an uneventful resolution to the 2020 Election for the US of A. Canada being North of the 49th Parallel is always affected by its big neighbour to the South. Many Canadians are glued to devices watching this 2020 US of A election unfold. South Shore Nova Scotia is home to many a "Summer House" and has always received our US of A neighbours with open arms, regardless of who leads the country. So, in a nut shell, for South Shore, Welshtown Haven, an All Season, Weekly Rental Vacation House.... We look forward in continuing to offer our humble accommodation to all, regardless of who wins tonight.

Town and Municipal Elections for Shelburne 2020

A new face for the old town of Shelburne Nova Scotia. Both Town and Municipal Elections are now over. Day to day business can resume. On  October 6, 2020 Our BLOG talked about the opportunity for change. One main issue was the use of the Rail trail. So, what happened with regard to that Rail Trail decision? <<According to the town, voter turnout in the election was 58.6 per cent. There was also a non-binding plebiscite question on the ballot. The question was: Should the rail trail as it passes through town be open to off-highway vehicles? There were 423 No votes and 374 Yes votes.>> Currently to get the Town of Shelburne results, one can read The Chronicle Herald article that provides the numbers quoted above; as well as, who's been elected as mayor and council. In time the Town of Shelburne will update their  Website for easy reference. The Municipality has already updated their page to reflect the recent election.  So, while the non-binding ...

High Speed Internet - Welshtown Area - Update

Fibre Optic is now available in the Welshtown area of the Municipality of Shelburne, NS. In the July 14, 2020 - High Speed Internet BLOG we talked about the upgrade in anticipation of the install. At long last it has happened. Why did it take our area so long and have their been other issues? Good question and deserving of some answers. Over the last few days we've had a pile of information thrown at us and a few decisions to make. The picture above is the net outcome of it all but what a ride! During our Yearly Management Review , some time was spent on site reviewing the property and how far along the running of new cable had progressed. Prior to arrival, Nova Scotia Power had cut trees along the roadside to allow the installation of a new Power Line. During August, they did manage to place the poles in the ground. Soon after leaving Shelburne Nova Scotia, we were informed that the Fibre Crew were stringing of cable along the road. Our part was to have a Fibre Optic strung fro...

Upcoming Town and Municipal elections...

Titan can be heard snarling and barking like a ferocious wild animal while he sleeps. He is dreaming. About what, I don't think anyone really knows. By day, he is a lovable Labrador quietly nudging for attention. Everybody has dreams. Some dreams we have while we sleep while others dreams while awake. It is these wakeful dreams of what could be, that can drive things forward or possibly into stagnation if they are to wild or ungoverned.  The Town Shelburne has an upcoming election for Town Council. The candidates are projecting what they believe they can accomplish and the towns people are looking for a way forward. Of concern for all are the Budgetary issues. Other common issues look to be available activities for youth, the cost of food, the Rail Trail and the issue of growth. Growth will occur within the area over time regardless of it being managed or not. No one has a crystal ball that sees into the future. Looking into the past to project a future vision can be difficu...

128RJ Husqvarna Trimmer - 10 Hours of use?

The  HUSQVARNA 128RJ is a.... <<Lightweight brushcutter, perfect for homeowners. Easy starting with Smart Start® recoil system, fuel pump and an always-ON auto return stop switch for trouble free starting. Fitted with a J-handle and harness. Equipped with easy loading, semi automatic, trimmer head and metal blade. E-TECH® engine for reduced emissions. >> Ya, okay.... that's the first review that comes up for this thing in Google (at least for us). With search criteria of "husqvarna 128rj review", you don't get much. I'm sure if we pop into the Amazon link they'll have something. Now, what's our experience with this durable item? This is a BLOG and that typically means a bit of a story. We will not fault the Dayton dealer, in the Canadian community of Yarmouth County. They were responsible and respectable while purchasing the trimmer, chainsaw and lawnmower back 4 years ago. Taking the trimmer back late this summer, they were also polite an...

State of Emergency - Mi’kmaw & Shelburne NS

Mi’kmaw Chiefs Declare State of Emergency within the province of Nova Scotia. While performing our managerial review we had the opportunity to speak with some of the locals about the current fishing issues and received a perspective on the topic. Yes, we could delve down into the current issue on a blow by blow basis; however, Welshtown Haven is not a news outlet nor is it about spreading perspectives of local events. What is of interest for Welshtown Haven is that this host community is yet again in the news. Yes again? You the reader may scratch ones head on that so, well, this little town looks to make the news, headline news, a lot more often then many other small communities of similar size.   Case in point, January 6, 2018 the supposedly sleepy town of Shelburne Nova Scotia made the headlines with regard to the Farley Mowat ship owner ordered to pay $144K to Town of Shelburne . Other instances of this town making the news can be found, not all of it positive; how...

Yearly Management Review

Sawdust under an apple tree should decompose over the next couple years, adding nutrients to the tree as time passes. Beyond the apple tree can be seen last years efforts a  Hugelkultur . It so far has not been overly spectacular.  The wood buried should act as a sponge during the rainy periods and provide moisture for plants growing atop; however, as of yet, there is no spectacular growth to report. In time things should work out. If we had of planted some shrubs to take root and erected a fence to stop the deer, things may have turned out better. The time was not available so, no finishing touches were done last year prior to leaving. Truth be known, two years ago, we did manage to plant some small gooseberry roots and thankfully they have taken and should thrive. Our expectations are not to have a prestean landscape planted by professionals over a one week time fame. Building the landscape with a living adventure is going to take some time and the help of mother natu...

South Shore N.S. and the Tourism Economy

Friday afternoon, Yarmouth N.S. the streets are bare. Now Yarmouth is not Toronto ON; however,  it is a regional hub point. We have frequented this small city in prior years and yes, the traffic is down. A few months ago the Atlantic provinces created an Atlantic Bubble. For the most part, traveling within the Bubble is allowed; as long as, you have your paperwork in order. Yes, this all sounds Orwellien in nature but an accurate depiction or parallel to reference. Gator Byte Computer  is considered by some in the local  community as an essential service providing new and used games to the locals. While business is down, they are open but are feeling the effects. The local mall is quiet as well. Of the local eating establishments, maybe half are closed while those that are open have a dispersed seating arrangement. Part time staff are not being used leaving the full time staff the opportunity to pull in solid hours.  Rudder's Seafood Restaurant-Brew  has ...

Albacore Sailing alive and well in Shelburne N.S.

Hiking on an Albacore is the process of providing a counter balance against the force of the wind attempting to blow the boat over. To the right center, one can make out a student leaning over the side in an attempt to keep that Albacore upright. Yes, it was a successful application of the technique and the crew did make it into port in short order. The little town of Shelburne Nova Scotia has managed to once again offer Albacore Sailing lessons to summer residence of the area. Over all, the summer has been slow for the sailing school. The students also have to adhear to the realities of COVID-19 restrictions though. The current weeks batch of students consists of nine students and a number of volunteers.  The town and municipality persistently hit high on the scale when it comes to facilitating needs. The sailing school being provided proves this out. From the outside, the school looks to be a big old building but non-descriptive beyond that. The inside provides a bit more insight...

South Shore, Climat Change & Self Sufficiency

Pony in the Mist Few days of the summer months has the South Shore of Nova Scotia had rain. The mornings, day break, is accompanied with a mist that soon burns off. For the most part, that represents the summer participation, few days receive actual rain. Today is special in that the mist has remained heavy into mid morning and a couple good spirts of rain have fallen. If a hurricane were upon us, all would be good; however, no pending hurricane is in the forecast. It is an odd day but also a very relaxed day without a wisp of wind.   We have noted in the past that Welshtown Haven's property is currently occupied with a construction crew and we are in anticipation of this persisting for the next little bit. While a blessing in disguise, it also forces the management team to source an alternate accommodation while performing the yearly review. Due to these dynamics, we have had an opportunity to view the Shelburne area from a slightly different perspective. Also, due to COVID...

CKBW Social Isolation made easy

Crossing the Quebec / New Brunswick boarder for us happened at 1 AM EST, 2 AM AST. Our start had been delayed leading to a late entry into the Maritime Province. Due to the time of day, the line to wait had been very short, consisting of one truck and car ahead of us. The guards had us pull over into a truck inspection station and provide details.  The bourder guard inquired where we intended upon sleeping and our reply was to sleep in the auto at the next truck stop. In short order, we were off and 5 minutes down the road we pulled into a truck stop and had a sleep. Our impression was, staying at any form of motel /  hotel would have been a NO NO. By late morning the New Brunswick / Nova Scotia boarder was in sight, Again, pulled off to the side, questioned and forms filled out. We were ordered to procede directly to our destination and self isolate for 14 days starting at that point.  Yes, the maritime provinces look to be taking things seriously. Yes, as visitors to th...

Small Business Banking - Not always easy....

Facilitating Transactions is not always easy. First off, lets put things into perspective..... I'm of the belief that our Banks offer services to its "Clients". The Grocery store has "Customers", so a difference exist between Client Vs. Customer OK? Now, the next little concept is the "Know your Client" mantra. A Bank should know its clients; however, this day and age of branch-less banking it is becoming even more difficult to get to know your bankers and in turn, them knowing you. So, when something silly comes up and you plop yourself down in front of bank employees, they are caught a little off guard..... They don't know you and if you really represent what you say,. How do banks make a profit? Well, ya, they take deposits and then lend the money out but it's a bit more involved then that cause you have to understand the " Bank Efficiency Ratio ". So, the classical role of a bank is to efficiently manage funds. They nee...

Digital Footprint - Trip Advisor & Air BNB

Trip Advisor Modern Technology, Web based technology has evolved allowing the tracking of location and device. Yes, nothing new to those accustom to today's technologies; however, invasive for those older who are trying to keep up with today's world. 2019, our management group had left head office to perform an on site inspection of our property with the expectation of logging onto the Air BNB and Trip Advisor Accounts while there. Sounds simple enough; however, changing location and device raises some Red Flags on both sites. Our ability to login at that time had been hindered. Yes, Welshtown Haven has an older management group and at times resistant to change or the adaptation of newer technologies. Our background being systems one would think otherwise. Also, due to our background, audit and control, the separation of function has also been ingrained upon us and to this end, at the time no SMS Text Messaging abilities had been entered into either Air BNB or Trip Ad...

Fibre Optic Cable - High Speed Internet - Upper Clyde Rd.

May 29, 2019 - Fibre Optic - Municipality of the District of Shelburne The Municipality of Shelburne Nova Scotia announced on its Facebook Page that Fibre Optic would be available to a host of new customers in the not so distant future. 2020/02/07 - While feeling blessed to have our All Season Weekly Rental Vacation House rented out this past winter, it has not been without mishap. Small things and mostly relating to the technology used for entertainment have happened. The current setup is a Cellular Data Router that provides blistering fast I-Net; however, it is costly. One discussion with our Property Manager garnered a response of: << no need to go over it again, fibre opt is now available in welshtown and they are doing hook up now might be something you may want to look into >>. So, with this..... yet another adventure is initiated!  2020/02/26 - Phoned Bell Aliant Office in Yarmouth inquiring about Fibre Optic hookup availability. They were unaware of any...
